Camp Safety

The ocean is a great source of
recreation, but it demands respect,
too. Although Paradise Cove boasts
clean water and gentle surf  --
absolutely ideal conditions for an
introductory beach camp program! --
that alone is not enough. To further
protect your child's safety, we employ
the following additional safety
measures and others at all times:

1. We require our staff to be
certified lifeguards
. This is a
fundamental condition of employment.

2. We teach daily sun and ocean
safety clinics
where our campers
learn about rip currents, dangerous shore break, high surf, the risks of diving
into shallow water, and other potentially hazardous conditions. Sunscreen is
applied liberally throughout the day, plus we supply umbrellas and canopies for
maximum shade and comfort.

3. We designate our campsite area with bright orange cones directly
adjacent to the Paradise Cove lifeguard tower.
This is our exculsive beachfront
campsite. Campers may not leave this coned-off boundary without their
counselor. The cones also send a "KEEP OUT" message to strangers.

Everyone wears a camp t-shirt or rash guard, and no one swims or visits the
restroom without someone from our staff.

Parents are invited to camp any time to supervise our safety program.

have any questions, please don't hesitate to

Camper-to-staff ratios are 3:1 in the water and 5:1 on the sand.
4. We maintain strict 5:1
camper-to-counselor ratios on the
beach.
When campers and staff enter
the water, the ratio becomes 3:1 or
less.

5. We enforce these additional
mandatory safety rules:
Every camper
is given a swim evaluation on the first
day of camp and, based on that
evaluation, wears a color-coded wristband designating how deep they can go in
the water. No one is allowed deeper than their waist.
